In our practice, we have several AABC registered staff with specialist skills in heritage conservation. We have experience in developing conservation plans and remedial / maintenance plans for significant heritage buildings, and have served as project architects for many restorations of heritage buildings.
Emphasis is always placed on understanding the existing building and developing sensitive and appropriate strategies for adaptive reuse. Instead of demolishing and replacing them, we believe modern technology can strengthen, restore and change existing buildings to extend their working life.
These detailed documents are often written when significant changes to planned and listed buildings are considered to provide a deep understanding of the heritage significance of the building and its component parts, identify constraints, and formulate policies to guide future work.
Individual heritage impact assessments have been prepared for various civic, industrial, commercial, educational, and residential buildings. These usually form part of the listed building consent application for modification or amendment.
With our expertise in understanding heritage buildings and retrieving conditional information, we are able to provide detailed specifications and illustrated repair and conservation plans for the procurement of competitive tenders.
Quadrennial inspections involve an assessment of a historic building, as well as a thorough survey of all aspects of the fabric of a building, which is used to identify problems that may have developed since the last inspection. This allows us to set priorities for repair to ensure the preservation of the historic fabric.
Inspections are generally frequent enough to identify problems before significant damage occurs. We have carried out hundreds of quadrennial inspections in accordance with customer and legal requirements.
It is becoming a regular condition of Listed Building Consent for heritage buildings to have a Heritage Construction Management Plan in place before works start on site. Castria have experience in producing reports of this type, photographic logs and monitoring work on site to ensure the protection of important heritage material.
We have a well-established relationship with heritage authorities, such as Historic England, and understand best practices and what is required from these reports.
Our practice is organised into multidisciplinary teams focused on producing intelligent,
innovative design solutions across an array of sectors.
