As our Bristol team continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced Senior Building Surveyor to join the practice and play a key role in developing our surveying capability.
The Role
This is a senior position suited to an experienced surveyor who is confident managing projects from initial enquiry through to final survey deliverables.
You will lead a varied workload of topographical and measured building surveys, combining hands-on site work with project management, client liaison, data processing, quality assurance and coordination with Castria’s wider architectural and engineering teams.
You will also help support and develop junior members of the surveying team and contribute to improving our survey standards, workflows and digital capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead topographical, land and measured building surveys from planning through to completion.
- Undertake detailed internal and external surveys of existing buildings and development sites.
- Plan survey methodology, control networks, equipment requirements and site resources.
- Produce and oversee accurate plans, elevations, sections and survey drawings.
- Operate and oversee the use of total stations, GNSS/GPS equipment and 3D laser scanners.
- Process, register and manage point cloud and survey datasets.
- Review survey information produced by other members of the team and undertake technical QA checks prior to issue.
- Take responsibility for the accuracy, quality and timely delivery of surveying information.
- Manage multiple survey projects and priorities.
- Liaise directly with clients to establish survey requirements, scope and deliverables.
- Attend site and project meetings where required.
- Coordinate survey information with Castria’s architectural, structural, civil engineering and building surveying teams.
- Identify site constraints, risks and information requirements at an early stage.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior surveyors and technicians.
- Assist with the development of surveying standards, procedures and digital workflows.
- Support the preparation of survey fee proposals, programmes and scopes of service.
- Undertake site work throughout Bristol, the South West and surrounding regions as required.
About You
We are looking for an experienced surveyor who is technically strong, commercially aware and comfortable taking responsibility for their own projects.
You should have:
- A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in land, topographical and/or measured building surveying.
- Strong practical knowledge of modern survey methodologies and industry best practice.
- Demonstrable experience delivering both topographical and measured building surveys.
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD & Revit or equivalent CAD software.
- Extensive practical experience with total stations, GNSS/GPS and laser scanning equipment.
- Experience processing and managing point cloud and survey data.
- The ability to independently plan and deliver survey commissions.
- Strong technical and quality assurance skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Good commercial awareness and understanding of project programmes and deliverables.
- Confidence communicating directly with clients, consultants and design teams.
- The ability to manage your own workload and support others within the team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A full UK driving licence.
- The right to work in the UK.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in any of the following would be advantageous:
- Advanced 3D laser scanning and point cloud processing.
- Scan-to-CAD and Scan-to-BIM workflows.
- Revit and BIM environments.
- Measured surveys of historic, listed or technically complex buildings.
- Engineering surveying and setting out.
- Managing or mentoring junior surveyors.
- Preparing fee proposals and survey scopes.
- Client account management and development of repeat business.
- Relevant surveying qualification or professional accreditation.
